Some Recent Events at MNGRR

On Sunday, July 18th, the Munjoy Hill Neighborhood Association held their annual MunjFest event. Ralph McLean and Robert Kelley were kind enough to represent us at a table set up at the event. They distributed literature and handed out some coupons for train rides. This is part of a renewed effort to engage in some community outreach and we are grateful to Ralph for taking the initiative and working for us in this capacity. Thanks Ralph and thanks Robert. It was a long hot day and we appreciate it.

On July 25th -- a hot and humid Sunday -- Dick Meyer, Erv Bickford, Matt Jankowski and Lincoln Good moved the open-air carriage from the museum out to the tracks. With the help of a bucket loader and a lot of determination and hard work, the move went smoothly. Great work from an amazing bunch of guys!

Patsy Mahoney has been acting as a docent on the train rides and is doing a great job! The passengers always love her and she enhances their experience enormously. Thanks Patsy.

In other new volunteer news: Miriam Nesset and Kerry Corthell have been helping out in the gift shop. Eva Holmes is giving us some invaluable IT advice as we move to update some of our technology here at the museum!

New train crew volunteers in training are Hashim Allah and Leo Chudigian.

The planning for Polar Express continues to move forward. Sue is interviewing prospects for the position of Volunteer Coordinator for the event, as a huge number of volunteers will be necessary to pull it off smoothly. There are many jobs to fill.

A recent photo shoot to promote Polar Express went very well! Jean Blanchard coordinated the event which included bringing in some children from her neighborhood who were willing to pose in their pajamas! They did a great job. Dick Norton reprised his role as Santa Claus and the pictures came out great!

The museum was the venue for a fun musical event on July 10th. Eternal Otter Records promoted their new CD release by organizing live performances both in the museum and on the train. Kerry Corthell helped to get the word out for this. It was a well-attended concert and lots of fun. It seems like the type of local arts-related activity that the train museum could benefit more from in the future. Being a venue for musical and other arts events – maybe art exhibits – is a natural. This ties in to what Ralph is doing with his community outreach work.

We’ve begun having more tour groups now that the tourist season is in full swing. We are getting a lot of visitors. And we have another wedding party using the train this weekend!

I'm glad the musical event went well! I had been thinking that something like this would be good for booth the museum and the music scene locally and at large.
Glad you guys pulled it off, I hope future such events go well.
